Fibromyalgia
Awareness petition (US)
This petition comes from the The Fibromyalgia Advocate by Dr. Devin Starlanyl,
M.D
 | Whereas
Fibromyalgia Syndrome is associated with disability of a magnitude
comparable to that of other chronic pain conditions and is a common and
costly cause of work disability, and the quality of life of a person with
Fibromyalgia Syndrome is less than those who suffer from Rheumatoïd
Arthritis, and Myofascial Pain Syndrome has been specified as incapacitating
torture,
 | Whereas
Fibromyalgia Syndrome is prevalent in the population, the etiology of
Fibromyalgia Syndrome is yet unknown, and the perpetuating factors for
myofascial trigger points have been ignored by the majority of the medical
establishment,
 | Whereas
Juvenile Fibromyalgia & Myofascial Pain Syndrome present a unique
challenge, cause our children to unduly suffer from their effects, and cause
needless embarrassment at their schools due to the pathophysiology of these
conditions being poorly understood,
 | Whereas
the majority of the medical and scientific community, the media, and our own
government, even in the face of research, past and present findings,
continue to trivialize Fibromyalgia Syndrome & Myofascial Pain Syndrome,
 | Whereas
people with the illnesses Fibromyalgia and Myofascial Pain Syndrome are
inadequately treated for pain, which is the main focus of their fatigue and
lack of quality sleep, or are treated with more invasive methods than are
necessary,
 | Whereas
suicide is the leading cause of death from Fibromyalgia Syndrome and chronic
Myofascial Pain Syndrome, and innumarable people with these nonterminal but
devastating illnesses have chosen to end their interminable pain and
suffering by taking their own lives,
 | We,
the undersigned, do hereby demand that a significant increase in RESEARCH
and EDUCATION grants for Fibromyalgia Syndrome research be awarded by all
governments, and that special funds be allocated to address the Unique and
challenging problems Fibromyalgia and Myofascial Pain Syndrome.
 | We
do hereby demand that Fibromyalgia Syndrome and chronic Myofascial Pain
Syndrome be listed as separate and distinct disabilities through the Social
Security Administration, including Canada Pension Plan Disability
Administration and that
sufferers who try to attempt to continue to work be protected by any Health
Insurance.
 | We
do hereby demand that the government and the scientific community cease and
desist from awarding research grants to individuals attempting to label
Fibromyalgia a psychogenic illness, as previous research has clearly shown
otherwise, instead spending the resources available on addressing the
biochemical abnormalities that are presently known and established
 | We
do hereby demand that a government committee be set up to deal with the
problems of Fibromyalgia Syndrome and chronic Myofascial Pain Syndrome, that
Fibromyalgia Syndrome and chronic Myofascial Pain Syndrome be taken
seriously as the devastating illnesses that they are, and not trivialized as
"aches and pain", by the government, the medical and scientific
communities, the media as a whole, and society itself.
 | We
do hereby demand that people with Fibromyalgia Syndrome and chronic
Myofascial Pain Syndrome be treated properly for pain, to include narcotic
pain medication when necessary, and that chronic/intractable pain patients,
not be made to suffer when there is medication available that will alleviate
such suffering, in place of being undertreated or treated with more invasive
methods.
 | We
do hereby demand that, to provide a better quality of life for millions of
Fibromyalgia Syndrome and chronic Myofascial Pain Syndrome sufferers, the
new and updated findings and research on Fibromyalgia Syndrome be taught in
the medical schools, and that the study of Travell and Simons' Myofascial
Pain and Dysfunction : The Trigger Point Manuals, Vol. I and Vol. II, be
made mandatory for medical schools, that these illnesses be recognized as
the devastating conditions that they are, and the wide range of symptoms
associated with Fibromyalgia and chronic Myofascial Pain Syndrome, other
than pain, also be recognized. |
